Foods that are Good for your Teeth

By Jake Stevens

When it comes to maintaining a bright smile, what you eat and drink on a daily bases can have more of an impact than consistent brushing.

If your diet is filled with unhealthy snacks, even brushing three times a day might not be enough.

To make sure that you are not damaging your teeth over a long period of time, we have created a list of foods that don't just reduce the threat of cavities; in fact they can proactively improve the state of your teeth and gums.

Seeds:

Pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds. These are all great in between meal snacks that are excellent for protecting your smile. The reason for this is that they are high in calcium and have their own cleaning properties which can strengthen the surface of your teeth in the long term. They're a great alternative to chewing gum, and because they are 'whole foods' they're great for an energy boost too.

Seeds are really versatile in cooking and can be added to soups, salads and other recipes to add some texture. Or of course you could just keep some handy to snack on in between meals.

Milk:

Milk, as many people know, contains a lot of calcium. This nutrient is really great for skin, nails and teeth alike. Although you may not be aware that milk also contains a lot of sugar, its high calcium content easily makes up for this.

Cheese:

Cheese is another great source of calcium, but with cheese there is a lower carbohydrate ratio than there is in milk so it's even better for your teeth. Milk actually jeopardises the PH level of your mouth, whereas cheese balances it. This doesn't mean you can go scoffing pizza all day though. To the contrary, combinations with other fatty or sugary ingredients can negate the positive influence of cheese on your teeth.

Water:

Water is the great for balancing the PH balancing levels in your mouth, which is one of the best ways to protect your teeth. If we can recommend one thing to you, it's water. If you consume a lot of water on a daily basis, it not only cleans your mouth and balances out the acidity, it also balances your gullet and your stomach, meaning that your entire oral area is cleansed and your teeth are less exposed to damaging substances.

Onions:

This may sound odd, because many people associate onions with bad oral hygiene because they cause bad breath. This is not the case though: they have powerful natural cleaning agents which are great for keeping your teeth healthy - just make sure you have plenty of gum to hand!
