How To Tame Wild Curls

By Tiffany Windhurst

Naturally curly hair can often be a wilderness of frizz and tangle. If you are looking for sleek and smooth straight hair, a vented flat iron can give you fabulous results.

Preparation is everything, so before you plug in your flat iron, give your hair a wash with anti-frizz or straightening shampoo. If you find your hair tangles easily, you should also use a conditioner. Towel dry your hair, but blot, don't scrunch or rub.

There are many styling products such as mousse that will help hold your hair into place. These products should be applied to damp hair before you start to straighten it. Once you're ready, section your hair with a comb, leaving a one inch section free at the base of your head, and piling the rest up with a clip.

Using a vented flat iron designed for wet hair, start close to the scalp and run the iron slowly through the hair to the tip. Repeat until each strand is straightened to your satisfaction. Continue straightening small sections of your hair until you are finished.

If you wish to define yourself with a little style rather than simply straight tresses, you can use your flat iron to add a bit of wave. Either flip up the ends by turning the iron, or curl some of your hair around the barrel, much like you would a curling iron. Your flat iron can give you super straight lines, or big, romantic curls, depending on how you use it.

The first couple of times you use your flat iron will be the most time consuming. It's a good idea to give yourself lots of time until your are comfortable using it. Once you get the hang of what works best in your hair, you'll be styling your hair quickly and easily.

Finish off your look with shining spray, hair spray or anti-frizz serum if you wish. The end result, whether you go razor straight, slightly wavy or rock star curly, is hair that is under control without fly away frizz.
