Health Coach Tips - Healthy Remedies For the Holidays

By Taheerah Barney

There is a constant debate regarding the use of home remedies to heal and prevent naturally occurring colds. The fact is, our traditional western diet and lifestyle has us in a state of constant deficiency. Natural remedies approved by a health coach are a way to supplement the vitamins and minerals we need to put our bodies back in balance. Whether they prevent the illness, sooth it or minimize the symptoms here are some home remedies to help you and your children fight back against the cold this holiday season.

Vitamin D - Most children aren't getting sufficient amounts during the holiday season due to a less-frequent exposure to sun light, creating a natural deficiency that can lead to illness and colds. Because of its natural ability to fight infection, it can be helpful to eat vitamin D fortified foods or take a D supplement on a regular basis.

Probiotics - Many foods are now being fortified with probiotics to aid in digestions. Probiotics have shown evidence of preventing upper respiratory infections. This is best applied as a maintenance plan as opposed to a cure for an existing cold.

Sleep - There is some real healing power in sleep, and many children don't get enough, especially after school starts. If they're up late tackling homework, playing late (video games), watching movies or just keeping poor hours then it can easily upset their cycle which disrupts the immune system's ability to function. Sleep can help prevent colds and other illnesses and it's also vital to recovery when a child becomes ill.

Salt - Salt has an anti-inflammatory property that can help mucus release and it can help to improve breathing function in this manner. When taken on a regular basis, tests have proven that a saline (salt) flush of the sinuses and nose can help reduce the bacteria count through cleansing and thereby reduce the number of illness onsets.

Honey - This remedy has a way of coating the throat much better than traditional over the counter medications and can provide a complete night full of relief for a child that has a terrible and painful cough. Just remember not to give it to any children under the age of 1.

Chicken Soup - The broth is particularly potent but the entire mix with vegetables and all offers the greatest reward, whether you want to easy a cold or help prevent it by eating the right foods. The anti-inflammatory properties of chicken soup help break up mucus, like saline, and can ease congestion.

Rest assured that these are all comfortable remedies used by health coaches around the world, especially in the United States, to help children and adults find their wellness center. When mixed in with a regular program for preventing illness, a strong diet of healthy foods and regular exercise you too can quickly eliminate the common cold with natural remedies.
